Thickness Of Metal For Sheet Metal Design

Sheet metal is metal form made by industrial metal manufacturers in Melbourne. The form of metal is available in thin and flat pieces, which is fundamental form used for metal works that can be cut and bent to form variety of shapes. Most of the everyday objects used by us around are fabricated from sheet metal. The thickness of metal varies significantly which range from extremely thin sheets (thickness of a foil or leaf) to plate sheets or structural sheets (6 mm).

Sheet metal design can be made with different types of sheet metals like flat pieces or coiled strips. The coils are formed by running a continuous sheet of metal through a roll sitter.

Sheet metal thickness is generally measured in terms of mm, and few countries use the term gauge to specify the thickness of the metal sheet. It is said that larger the gauge, the thinner the metal. Commonly used sheet metal has gauge from 30 to about 7 gauge. Ferrous metals like (iron) and non-ferrous metals (like aluminum and copper) have different gauge.

There are many metals that can be made into sheet metal such as aluminum, brass, copper, steel, tin, nickel and titanium. The costlier metals like silver, gold and platinum are used for making decorative items or jewellery.

Sheet metal of iron and other materials with high magnetic permeability are known as laminated steel cores have its applications in transformers and electric machines.

Techniques for sheet metal fabrication differ from metal to metal. This difference in techniques is because of the strength of the metals. For example, a sheet metal of aluminum and iron is taken; aluminum sheet can be given shape with little pressure, while an iron sheet would require much more strength to get into the desired shape.  The techniques also depend on the thickness of metal sheet. Sheets of all thickness cannot use the same technique.
